SEA KREW · WINTER SURF GUIDE

SURFING PORTUGAL IN WINTER

A local coach's guide to the season's best waves: water temps, wetsuits and where to go.

THE WAVES

BIGGER WAVES, FEWER CROWDS

From November to March the Atlantic sends consistent swell, mornings are often offshore and the summer crowds go home. More waves per session, more time to practise.

THE WATER

COLD, BUT VERY SURFABLE

About 14–16°C at its coldest in February. Bring a 4/3 and boots, or use ours: they're included in every Sea Krew session.

YOUR LEVEL

BUILT FOR GREEN-WAVE SURFERS

Intermediate or advanced? Winter is your best season to progress. Total beginner? Come between spring and autumn, when the waves are gentler.

WHERE TO SURF

ERICEIRA, SANTA CRUZ & LISBON

Reefs and points in Europe's World Surfing Reserve, quiet beach breaks in Santa Cruz, all less than an hour from Lisbon.

BIG-WAVE SEASON

THE GIANTS OF NAZARÉ

Watch the biggest waves on the planet with a spotter from the Nexus tow-surf team. Tours depend on swell and safety conditions.
